Permanent Residence in the UAE: The Alternatives

There is no permanent residence status in the UAE. Long-term Golden and Green visas, renewed while their conditions are met, are the nearest equivalent for founders and investors planning an indefinite stay.

Golden Residency renewal

Because the UAE grants no permanent residence, long-term planning rests on renewing the Golden Visa. ICP describes the Golden Residency as long-term residence for ten years with automatic renewal and no sponsor, and GDRFA extends the entrepreneur permit when the same conditions are met. In practice the holder keeps the qualifying basis in place, whether revenue, property, investment or talent recognition, and stays self-supporting. A Golden Visa never converts into a separate permanent status: it remains a renewable permit, and losing the underlying qualification removes the basis for the next term. Dubai lists a dedicated renewal service for entrepreneurs.

Permanent status
No permanent residence category for foreign nationals
Golden term
10 years in ICP's guide, renewable
Green term
5 years, renewable on meeting the requirements
Renewal basis
Same conditions as the original grant
Self-support
Required to keep the Golden Residence

Requirements

  • Continued compliance with the category that justified the original Golden Visa.
  • Ability to support oneself and one's family without government support.
  • Valid health insurance for the holder and family, as the category requires.
  • A residence permit still valid at renewal, since a permit that expires while the holder is abroad lapses.

How to apply

  1. Check that the qualifying investment, revenue or recognition still meets the current criteria.
  2. Apply for renewal through ICP or the emirate's authority, such as GDRFA's renewal service in Dubai.
  3. Renew family members' permits in line with the main holder's residence.

Why the UAE has no permanent residence

Residence in the UAE is always granted for a fixed term and depends on a sponsor or on a qualifying status. The Golden and Green schemes removed the need for an employer or family sponsor and lengthened the term to five or ten years, but they did not create an indefinite right to stay. Time spent on these visas does not accumulate toward any permanent category, and nationality follows a separate nomination process. A founder who wants an indefinite base therefore plans around renewal, keeping the company, property or investment that underpins the visa.

For many families the practical difference is smaller than it looks. Golden Visa holders sponsor spouses, children of any age and parents, may stay abroad beyond six months, and family members can remain until their permits expire if the main holder dies. What is missing is protection against a change in circumstances: a sale of the qualifying asset, a collapse in revenue or a change in the criteria can end eligibility at the next renewal.

Questions and answers

Does the UAE offer permanent residency?

No. The UAE has no permanent residence status for foreign nationals. The Golden Visa, with a term of up to ten years, and the five-year Green Visa are the longest residence options. Both are renewable while their conditions are met, which makes them the closest equivalent to permanent residence.

Is the UAE Golden Visa renewed automatically?

ICP's guide describes the Golden Residency as ten years with automatic renewal, while GDRFA in Dubai extends it when the same conditions are still met. Holders should expect the authority to check that the qualifying basis, such as property or company revenue, still exists at renewal.

Do years on a Golden Visa lead to UAE citizenship?

No. Residence time does not create a right to apply for Emirati nationality. Citizenship is granted only through nominations from federal entities, handled by the Rulers' and Crown Princes' Courts, the Executive Council offices and the Cabinet, so a Golden Visa remains a residence permit however long it is held.
