What permanent residence requires

Permanent residence usually depends on continuous lawful residence over a set number of years, with limits on time spent abroad. Many countries add language and integration tests, proof of stable income and health insurance, and a clean criminal record. For founders, the type of permit held along the way matters: in some countries every year on a startup permit counts in full, in others only part of it does.

A small group of countries grant permanent residence at the point of approval for certain founder or investor routes. Others have no permanent residence at all and rely on long-term renewable visas instead. Each country page explains which applies.
