Canadian Citizenship After Permanent Residence
Naturalization in Canada rests on physical presence, not on the program a person used to immigrate. Founders and investors qualify on the same terms as everyone else: 1,095 days in Canada within five years, filed taxes, language proof and, for most adults, a test.

Grant of Canadian citizenship (adults)
Adult permanent residents can apply for a grant of citizenship once they have been physically present in Canada for at least 1,095 days during the five years before signing the application. Days spent in Canada as a temporary resident or protected person within that window count as half days, with the credit capped at 365 days. Applicants may need to have filed Canadian taxes for at least three of those five years. Those aged 18 to 54 must show English or French at Canadian Language Benchmark level 4 in speaking and listening, and must pass the citizenship test. Criminal and security prohibitions can bar a grant.

Dual citizenship and planning the timeline
Canadian law allows a person to hold Canadian citizenship together with one or more other nationalities, and no separate application or certificate is needed for dual status. The other country's law is a different matter: some states withdraw citizenship when a national voluntarily acquires another, and that country's embassy or consulate is the authority on the point. Dual citizens flying to Canada need a valid Canadian passport, and their other nationality may bring different entry and exit rules when they travel abroad.
Canada has no program that grants citizenship in exchange for investment, and business immigrants follow the standard grant process. The timeline therefore depends on the landing date and on travel. A founder who becomes a permanent resident and spends most of each year in Canada can reach 1,095 days after about three years, while frequent business trips push the date later. IRCC recommends applying with more than the minimum number of days in case the calculation is questioned.
Questions and answers
How long after landing can a founder apply for Canadian citizenship?
As soon as the founder has 1,095 days of physical presence within the five years before signing the application. Up to 365 of those days can come from time spent in Canada before landing, counted at half value. A founder who arrives as a permanent resident and rarely travels can therefore apply after roughly three years.
Does Canada allow dual citizenship?
Yes. Canadian citizenship law permits multiple citizenship, so Canada does not ask a new citizen to renounce another nationality. The question is whether the other country allows it, since some countries end citizenship when a national acquires another one voluntarily. Their embassy or consulate in Canada can confirm the rule that applies.
Who has to take the Canadian citizenship test?
Applicants aged 18 to 54 on the day they sign the application must take the test, and the same age group must prove English or French at CLB 4 in speaking and listening. Adults aged 55 and over and all minors under 18 are exempt from both the test and the language requirement.
Can investment speed up Canadian citizenship?
No. Canada does not offer citizenship by investment, and the physical presence rule applies equally to investors, founders and other permanent residents. Investment can only influence the earlier step of obtaining permanent residence, for example through Québec's Investor Program; the 1,095-day count starts working in full only after landing.
