British Citizenship by Naturalization
British citizenship normally requires 5 years of residence plus 12 months free of immigration time limits. For an Innovator Founder who settles at year 3, the 5-year residence test usually sets the earliest application date.

Naturalisation as a British citizen
Adults who hold indefinite leave to remain or settled status can apply once they have lived in the UK for 5 years and held that status for 12 months; the 12-month wait does not apply to spouses of British citizens. Applicants must have been in the UK exactly 5 years before the Home Office receives the form, with no more than 450 days abroad over those 5 years and no more than 90 in the final year. They also prove English at B1 or above, pass the Life in the UK Test and meet the good character requirement. A successful applicant becomes a citizen at a ceremony and keeps any other nationality under UK law.

Typical timeline after the Innovator Founder route
Settlement at year 3 does not open the door to citizenship one year later, because the 5-year residence test still has to be met. In practice, an Innovator Founder who lives continuously in the UK can usually apply for citizenship about 5 years after arrival, by which point indefinite leave to remain has been held for around 2 years. Absences count heavily: the 450-day limit over 5 years averages out at about 90 days a year, which founders who travel widely for sales or fundraising can exceed without realizing it.
Possible future changes
The 2025 settlement consultation said reforms to citizenship would build on any changes made to settlement and would aim to reflect similar principles of longer qualifying periods, with shorter paths for those who contribute more. It also noted that changing the British Nationality Act 1981 requires primary legislation. No such bill had changed the residence requirements by October 2026, so the current 5-year test and 12-month rule remain the reference points for founders planning ahead.
Questions and answers
Does the UK allow dual citizenship?
Yes. GOV.UK states that dual citizenship is allowed in the UK, and nobody needs to apply for permission to hold two nationalities. Applicants check the law of their other country, because some states end their own citizenship automatically when a national naturalizes elsewhere.
Is there a citizenship by investment option in the UK?
No. British citizenship cannot be purchased, and the only investment-based residence route, the Tier 1 (Investor) visa, closed to new applicants in February 2022. Investors and founders reach citizenship through settlement on a visa route such as Innovator Founder or Global Talent followed by naturalization.
Which English qualifications are accepted for citizenship?
GOV.UK accepts an approved English qualification at B1, B2, C1 or C2 level, or a degree taught or researched in English. Knowledge of Welsh or Scottish Gaelic can be shown instead of English, and GOV.UK lists separate circumstances in which no language evidence is needed.
