Permanent residence permit
Applicants must be over 18, still meet the conditions of their current permit and have 8 years of uninterrupted legal residence. The basic conditions also cover a clean criminal record, no overdue public debt, no benefits under the Active Social Policy Act or the Integration Act in the past 4 years, a pass in Danish language test 2, and 3 years and 6 months of full-time work within the last 4 years, with current employment or self-employment at the time of decision. On top of these, applicants meet at least 2 of 4 supplementary requirements. Meeting all 4 cuts the residence requirement to 4 years.

The four supplementary requirements
The supplementary list rewards deeper integration. The four options are passing Danish language test 3 or an equivalent exam; 4 years of full-time employment or self-employment within the last 4 years and 6 months; passing the active citizen exam or showing at least one year of active citizenship, such as serving on a board or in an association; and an average annual taxable income of at least DKK 346,155.57 over the past two years at the 2026 level. A founder on the 8-year route needs two of these, while the 4-year route requires all four.
Self-employment and the work tests
For founders, the key detail is that self-employment counts when the work carries the same weight as regular full-time employment and is the main source of income that makes the applicant self-sufficient. Full-time is defined as at least 30 hours a week or 120 hours a month. A Start-up Denmark holder whose company pays a modest salary for several years may meet the residence and work tests yet still fall short of the income option, so founders plan which two supplementary requirements they will rely on.
Questions and answers
Can a Start-up Denmark founder get permanent residence after 4 years?
Only by meeting all four supplementary requirements as well as the basic conditions. That means Danish language test 3, 4 years of full-time work or self-employment, the active citizen exam or a year of active citizenship, and average taxable income of at least DKK 346,155.57 over two years at the 2026 level.
What happens if the permit expires before the application is filed?
The Danish Immigration Service asks applicants to file before the current permit runs out. A late application may be refused, and the period of residence may have to start again, which can cost a founder years of qualifying time. Extending the temporary permit on schedule protects the count.
Does Denmark offer permanent residence through investment?
No. Danish permanent residence depends on years of legal stay, language results, work history, self-support and integration criteria. There is no route that substitutes a capital investment for those conditions, although a high taxable income can count as one supplementary requirement.
